Operation Promise: Fact-Finding Mission to Ethiopia

March 16, 2006 / 16 Adar 5766

A delegation of leaders from the Jewish Federations of North America, the UJC  (United Jewish Communities), and prominent donors were accompanied by Jewish Agency Chairman Zeev Bielski on a fact-finding mission in Ethiopia. Their visit is linked with Operation Promise whose goal is to raise $160 million in new funds to help Ethiopian Jews resettling in Israel ($100 million) and  elderly Jews who remain behind in the former Soviet Union ($60 million).

On the return flight to Israel, 151 new immigrants accompanied the delegation. The delegates followed the immigrants' first steps in Israel, from receiving their identity cards, transferring to the absorption center, and finally to attending academic institutions.

The delegates visited the newly arrived immigrants at the Jewish Agency Absorption Center in Lod and supplied them with the basic necessities needed to establish a household, including mezzuzot for their doorposts. Afterwards, they  dropped in on enrichment classes offered to the new immigrants.
