In 1536 during Henry's reign there were about 37 families who had semi official status. They were not recognized as Jews but New Christians . Services were held at the home of Alves Lopes The community was led by Dinoysius Rodriguez who had been the physician of the court of Portugal and was considered one of the leaders of the Marrano community.
The community began to decline on its own. In 1609 the community suffering from infighting split and one party denounce the other as Judaizing. James I under pressure from Spain closed the community and expelled all its members. For the next 50 years until the petition by Menasseh ben Israel was presented to Cromwell (1655) there was no Marranos community in England.
