Austrian traveler, physician, linguist, and explorer, Schnitzer who had taken on a Turkish name Emin Pasha, traveled throughout Africa as an explorer, adventurer, administrator and especially a doctor, spending much of his time in Khartoum in the Sudan while serving as a governor under General Gordon. Pasha was a tireless fighter against the slave trade which was still rampant. Schnitzer had returned to Central Africa on a semi-political voyage for Germany when on October 20, 1892 he was assassinated by slave traders. Emin Pasha Gulf, the Southern Bay of Lake Victoria, was named after him.
