Hank Greenberg (1911 - 1986)

YES! Hank began with the Detroit Tigers in 1933. His hitting average for his first season was .301 and at the age of 23 he was the team's star. Like Sandy Koufax he refused to play on Yom Kippur (1934) and although the Tigers lost the game he never regretted his decision. In May 1941 he was drafted and released 6 months later due to his age (28). After Pearl Harbor, although he was the highest paid ball player in the Major Leagues, he reenlisted for four years attaining the rank of captain in the army air force and saw a lot of action in the China-Burma-India area.
