Jacques Faitlovitch, orientalist. Faitlovitch studies oriental languages at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris, under Joseph Halevy. In 1904 he spent 18 months in Ethiopia (Abyssinia) and wrote a book on the customs of Ethiopian Jews called
Notes d'un voyage chez les Falachas.
He took it upon himself to raise money for Jewish education through "pro-Falasha" committees in various European countries. He returned to Ethiopia a number of times, wrote numerous books and articles, and finally in 1923 succeeded in opening a school in Addis Ababa. Faitlovitch believed that it was incumbent on Jewish leaders to save them from missionary activity and bring them back to traditional Judaism.
