What Media Coverage?
Gila Ansell Brauner

George Orwell's mockery of politicized new speak is appropriate in the world of modern supposed political correctness, which de facto encourages the use of very partisan language, rather than neutral objectivity: on Friday morning, 8th March 2008, BBC World Service reported, "8 people killed in a religious seminar in Jerusalem".
Note, not: Boys, high school pupils, teenagers - or even children and adults - which would have afforded an accurate impression of the innocent victims.

While my mind is still reeling with the horrific bloodbath of last night, hearing the sirens wailing and watching the story of the massacre unfold on the news that went on for 2.5 hours, and a sleepless night, I find this detached downplay of murder immensely hard to digest - let alone accept.

Where was  the sensitivity to the terrible human tragedy in the BBC report?
All totally absent - so that the report would be sterile, sanitized, without any sense of highlight in relation to this act of terror - unlike their condemnations in reporting the heinous school massacres in the USA in Columbine and subsequent attacks, which were deemed to be just that: murderous killing sprees, or epithets of that order.

And, of course, so very unlike the ratings-moved reporting that the same BBC disseminates from the Gaza Strip... While there may be legitimate questions about the use of highly explicit photography on public television, real-time reporting in all its gory reality is the language of the media - but not when it comes to Israel.
Especially significat is the terminology issue - and exclusively so, for radio broadcasts.

The only way to convey our message of grief and shock at the murders in Yeshivat Merkaz Harav is to stand together and protest all tolerance of terror and double standards - on the street.
It is equally important to highlight the lackadaisical way in which this act of terror has been reported by the BBC and other media, Please do so emphatically: in writing, through phone calls, on blogs, and with the media.
