Beer Sheva Net@ Adventure Builds Group Feeling

1.6.2005

By Meara Razon, Jewish Agency Otzma Intern

Project Net@ is creating tomorrow's leaders by educating youth from Israel's periphery, giving them the keys to success and a brighter future. Net@ groups meet a few times a week for computer classes as well as social and community related activities.

Now in its second year, Net@ includes 14 groups spread throughout Israel's peripheries, with some 1,000 pupils in grades 9-11. Net@ targets pupils with average learning skills, motivating them to attain higher achievements.

Recently, the Beer Sheva Net@ group tested their skills in a two day outdoor adventure retreat. They were challenged both mentally and physically. Relying on the trust of their peers they were able to help one another through their obstacles.

One of the challenges included helping their group members crawl through the cave blindfolded. "I trust my group, we are a team," says Miri Movich. It is obvious watching the group interact that there is constant positive energy and high level of trust and respect for one another.

The groups' technological instructor Izik Avidan has now been with the group for two years. He is their teacher in the classroom with computers and a mentor to the kids in life. "Once or twice a week I feel like a parent. I love these kids. It has been an amazing over two years to watch them mature and realize that their dreams can be fulfilled. They have taken an interest in their communities and the people around them. Net@ has changed their lives as well as mine for the better" says Izik Avidan.

Some of the kids have used what they have learned in the classes and initiated a way to spread some of the knowledge to the rest of the community. They have created a computer/internet class for adults. "It feels good to help the community and do something for someone else," says Doron Schissel.

Net@ is a three year program that brings high-level technological know-how to youngsters. Project Net@ incorporates technological learning as well as social actives and community service. The social plan is synergized with the Pedagogic program to enhance the students, educates them to become better in every field, and to make a significant contribution to their communities.
