But the plain fact is that children today fool themselves into thinking they have the cognitive and motive skills of adults, whereas their cognition is "upside down" and their motives for acting haven't yet ripened. Our sages indeed forecast this development (Gemara Sota 49), "in the pre-Messianic era impudence will swell". Our youth are, in fact, impudent when they believe they have the full faculties to make decisions like adults, but this is the reality. We are often awe-struck by the audacity and self confidence of "babies" who view themselves as adults.
