Chovat Hatalmidim: Message to Teachers and Parents (24)
In previous generations even if the parent or counselor did not fully follow King Solomon's instruction to teach each child in accord with his individual personality and inclinations - and only instructed him to perform the commandments without giving explanation - the child still tended to listen, as youth in those days had a clean soul. The child himself felt emptiness when he did not fully understand things and sought to learn more and more. On those occasions when he misbehaved the child felt that only he was to blame - not his father or teacher who disciplined him; he undertook to better his ways and listen to them. Thus, the child absorbed the Torah lifestyle and slowly developed into a faithful Jew. Not all of the youth may have been at the same spiritual level, but at least all of them were faithful.
